This vibrant and fun musical is based on the Biblical story in Genesis of Joseph, his eleven brothers, and their father Jacob. Joseph is his father’s favourite son and Jacob’s gift to Joseph of a multi-coloured coat is the final straw for his jealous brothers. They sell Joseph as a slave and he is taken to Egypt, while the brothers tell their father that Joseph has died.
Although he works hard and is admired by his Egyptian master Potiphar, Joseph ends up in jail as a result of a misunderstanding. Joseph’s reputation as someone who can correctly interpret dreams eventually gets the attention of Pharaoh who has himself been having unusual dreams he cannot understand.
Pharaoh is so impressed by Joseph’s ability to find meaning in dreams that he makes him his second in command, and Joseph’s plan to get Egypt through the seven years of famine he foresaw in Pharaoh’s dream is incredibly successful.
Meanwhile, Joseph’s brothers back in Canaan are starving and they decide to travel to Egypt in search of food. Joseph recognises them immediately, but they have no idea who Joseph is. Joseph tests their integrity and, satisfied they have changed, reveals himself to them and they are all reconciled.
